Starting my own yoga business

Hey! Thanks for stopping by.
I never really thought I would teach yoga. I have been a student of yoga for over two decades, I love my practice and teaching my sons, niece, nephew and granddaughter. But I'm a stay-at-home mom / housewife. My life revolved around my family. But in 2021 I decided I wanted to start a career. My youngest two sons are teenagers now and I needed a new purpose. Cue in my sister Jo Ann, who for years never let me forget an idea I had one night of teaching yoga when my kids were older. After talking to my husband Mike about what I was thinking, I decided I wanted to learn how to teach Yoga. I knew how to do yoga but was teaching any different? He was on board, full speed ahead!
First step, how do you become a yoga teacher? There are so many schools out there. I didn't realize how many places taught teacher training. I found one that suited me, and I signed up before I could talk myself out of it. My first 200 Hour (registered) yoga teacher training (RYT-200). I went to Online Yoga School, Yoga and Ayurveda Center in Pennsylvania. One of the reasons I picked this one out of all the choices is because the studio is about three hours from where I grew up. There are a ton of online trainings right now because of Covid. Which in a way helped me since I didn’t really have the time to go to a studio and go to class. I have two teenagers at home and my oldest, I watch his daughter while he and my daughter in law are at work. So, my days are pretty busy. But I always have time for yoga. All my kids have their own yoga mats, and my granddaughter has her own too. I finished my 200-hour training in September 2021. Which I was super happy about. Because I had reached out to the local middle school and started an after-school Yoga class for the students. I was hoping to have my training done before classes started and I did. Goal achieved! I have enjoyed my first semester teaching teens yoga every other week. There have been moments that I catch while teaching that I will never forget. One being, I like to end my classes with a yoga nidra. Helps to calm the mind and the kids seem to enjoy it. I used the fact we were outside that day and told my students to feel the ground beneath them. A few of them spread their hands out and felt the grass. A connection with nature. Something that is overlooked daily. But to me seeing that was the one of the best moments. I hope to have more outdoor classes once spring arrives.
After I did my 200 hr RYT (registered yoga teacher training), I did a restorative class, I love restorative yoga. My friend Tracey who is a yoga teacher in Colorado introduced me to this. I completed my Children’s Yoga (2-17 yrs) before my 200 class. I didn’t realize you needed the 200 hr training before doing other classes. So, a bit backwards. I learned that all that meant was that I couldn’t register my children’s course with Yoga Alliance. But I still got the education and that’s all that mattered to me. I also did a Chair yoga class. Which I love because sometimes you need some props. Next, I did an Ayurveda class, (The sister science to Yoga and India’s ancient medical system) I finished it but not 100% sure about it. Challenging and very helpful. Then one night for no reason at all I signed up for a Holistic Women’s health Couch class. This one was fun, and I intend to learn more. I don’t know if I will ever get tired of learning more about yoga. I did find that a lot of my required readings were of books I had already read and still own. So that was cool. I felt that maybe I had a leg in the door for years, I just needed that push through it (Thanks Jo). At the moment I am doing my 300 hr Yoga teacher training. I have a goal to have this completed by December of 2022. It’s been a lot of schooling for me in 2021. But I loved all of it.
Thank you so much for visiting my site and reading my first ever blog. Eek! How exciting!! I can’t wait to start sharing the next chapter in my yoga journey with ya’ll. Till next time.
Namaste.
Angie xoxo
